As part of the GET H2 Nukleus project, hydrogen produced from renewable sources was transported for the first time on August 4 from Lingen in Lower Saxony to the Marl Chemical Park in North Rhine-Westphalia. This marks the first successful integration of electrolysis, transport infrastructure, and industrial use within a continuous hydrogen system.
The green hydrogen produced by RWE was transported to Marl via an approximately 120-kilometer pipeline network operated by transmission system operators OGE and Nowega, as well as Synex, a subsidiary of Evonik, where it was subsequently used for industrial purposes.
Using cpX.Energy, the IT processes for data management and balancing were implemented as part of this pioneering project, including for the system operator Nowega. In doing so, Sopra Steria contributed to the successful achievement of another important milestone in the development of Germany’s hydrogen economy.
Hydrogen is one of the keys to decarbonizing industry and other sectors. Founded in 2019, the GET H2 initiative brings together more than 50 companies, institutions, associations, and municipalities that are working jointly to establish the foundation for a sustainable hydrogen economy in Germany. The initiative focuses on the planning and implementation of projects across the entire hydrogen value chain, from electrolysis, import, transport, and storage to applications in various industrial sectors.
With GET H2 Nukleus, a project funded by the German federal and state governments as an IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest), the project partners commissioned one of the first integrated industrial-scale hydrogen projects in 2026.
